NYC’s Money Man Just Told Anthropic Something—Why Does It Matter?

What NYC’s money man told Anthropic—and why the AI company should pay attention

NYC's Money Man Just Told Anthropic to Slow Down

NYC Comptroller Mark Levine just did something unprecedented: he used his position as steward of $325 billion in pension assets to pressure Anthropic into pausing its planned IPO.

The reason? Anthropic's own safety warnings.

Levine's letter cites Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's September essay — "We Must Pace the Frontier" — where Amodei admitted that addressing AI risks requires "even more prudence" and that we must "slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models."

Yet Anthropic is reportedly pushing an IPO that could value the company at $2 trillion.

The red flags Levine highlighted:

• Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned in September, warning AI "could kill us all by the end of the decade"
• Anthropic's own Alignment Science Lead puts the risk above 10% within the next decade
• The company's draft S-1 filing warns of "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity"
• The risk disclosures span 80 pages — nearly double the business description

Levine's core argument: if the risks are this serious, the IPO can wait. "Prudence should not only be shown with respect to the pace of the frontier, it should be also shown with respect to the timing of an IPO."

Why it matters for NYC operators:

This is the most direct government intervention in AI corporate governance yet. Levine isn't a regulator — he's an investor with fiduciary duty to millions of retirees. When pension funds start treating AI safety as a material investment risk, the liability landscape for AI companies shifts.

For NYC businesses adopting AI tools, this signals that government scrutiny is escalating fast — and not just from regulators, but from the investors holding the purse strings.
