Hochul's $10M Bet: 40,000 New Yorkers Will Train for AI Careers by 2032

Governor Hochul just made the state's biggest concrete commitment yet to AI workforce training: a $10 million AI Jobs Institute in Long Island City that aims to train 40,000 New Yorkers by 2032.

The Institute is operated by Pursuit, a Queens-based nonprofit that's spent over a decade moving low-wage workers into six-figure tech careers. Empire State Development is putting in $3.06 million, with the rest coming from public investment.

Why it matters for NYC operators:

This isn't a theoretical report. It's a working hub designed to move at the speed employers actually hire — training people for roles as they emerge, not years later.

Hochul's quote frames the stakes: "During a time when AI is transforming our workforce and causing uncertainty, New York is continuing to lead the nation with policies and training to ensure New Yorkers workers are protected and prepared for the future."

Pursuit CEO Nick Simmons added: "New York has an opportunity to set the national standard for how AI creates opportunity."

The Institute also complements Hochul's FutureWorks Commission, which will issue statewide recommendations on AI workforce transitions later this year, and the AI Prep for Jobs initiative already training 420 low-income New Yorkers.

The bottom line: 40,000 newly trained AI workers will enter NYC's job market over the next six years. For small business owners, that means a growing talent pool — but also rising expectations for AI fluency in every role.
